Le Contexte

The city of Zurich is a pioneer in sustainable urban mobility, blending innovation with tradition to create a highly efficient and environmentally friendly transport network. Zurich has set benchmarks with its seamless integration of public transportation, extensive cycling infrastructure, and commitment to electrification, all of which facilitate multi-modal movement within Switzerland’s largest city.

Le problème

High levels of commuter and seasonal tourist flows have required the city to develop an adaptable transport system. As an international hub, the city frequently hosts high-profile events that attract large crowds, putting pressure on its public transportation, road networks, and pedestrian infrastructure. Managing these peaks in demand requires strategic planning and real-time reactivity to prevent congestion and maintain accessibility for residents, visitors, and commuters alike. Controlling micro-mobility in this context poses a unique challenge in the breadth of stakeholders and its flexibility as a transport solution.

Avantages de la mise en œuvre

Consistent historical and live data provide key insights that can ensure appropriate planning and effective execution of event-driven micro-mobility management. Historical flow data gives an understanding of journey and activity hotspots that can inform the design of temporary speed, parking and access restrictions to minimise potential disruption to the transport system. During the course of events, live fleet data allows for city-wide and real-time enforcement of regulations, important tools for delivering seamless transportation options and outcomes.

La solution

Vianova has partnered with the city of Zurich to enhance urban mobility management through the innovative Cityscope platform. Integrating live and anonymised historical data feeds with robust analytics and reporting capabilities, Cityscope enabled Zurich to analyse mobility trends in and around the track and other planned restriction areas in advance of the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships. A central regulation and management function integrated across providers and vehicle types, allowed Zurich to define, communicate and monitor custom low-speed, no parking and no-go zones throughout the week-long event.

Les résultats

For the duration of the UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships, Zurich was able to implement and enforce a series of dedicated rules for micro-mobility, to ensure this aligned with the broader traffic management strategy. No-parking and no-go zones were communicated automatically to operators before the event through Cityscope, whilst infringements could be tracked and reported to operators in real-time, throughout the event. Through the Cityscope web-app, Zurich also had the option to integrate on-site device reporting with the Public Right of Way management team.

Following the event, Cityscope’s automated reporting feature provided a comprehensive summary of micro-mobility activity in the context of the event-specific regulations, at vehicle type, operator and hourly levels. Leveraging these reports, Zurich was able to accurately evaluate the impact of, and adherence to the various regulations, and engage with operators in data-driven discussions.
